Book Overview
Unless Institutional Christianity returns to the simplicity of the Gospel, namely the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, she will continue to mislead and shipwreck unsuspecting people of all persuasions. Jesus is the Key to understanding the Old and New Testaments, and for that matter, all of life. Only in a close, intimate relationship with Jesus can anyone be transformed into a child of God. Believers must begin with Jesus, journey with Jesus, and finish with Jesus. The Christ determines Christianity, and Him alone.
The Western Church is in a crisis. Professional clergy are running out of gimmicks and programs. Corporate business techniques are bankrupt. Clever sermons and comfortable sanctuaries have failed to address deeper needs. The smokescreen of high-energy music and provocative drama is rapidly lifting. And still others retreat to early contemplative methods in hopes of jump starting their faith.
The surest sign of this crisis, however, is the spiritually weak state of individual believers. Most of these folks are Sunday morning milk drinkers. The immature are no further along in their faith than they were ten or twenty years ago. Few believers know what their spiritual gifts are, let alone their calling. The vast majority of Christians have no idea how to express their faith in common, everyday living.
In his follow-up to The Fellowship of Ghosts-A Guide to Overcoming, Walter Justice sets forth an ancient, but biblical means for maturing believers—family. God is family, and virtually all of His created order resembles Him, except the Church. Jesus is waiting for His Bride to shed her adolescence and step into maturity. The only way for the Church to attain adulthood is to rediscover family.
Many Christians are stuck.
Issues and struggles that have plagued them for years, even decades, just won’t go away. They chase superstars from conference to conference seeking elusive answers and help. Others are so hurt and wounded by the church, they simply resign themselves to bitter criticism. A few are on the verge of giving up, and walking away from their faith.
In his book, The Fellowship of Ghosts—A Guide To Overcoming, Walter Justice has an answer for the disillusioned and the broken-hearted. It’s called overcoming. He guides them through a painful, but victorious process of confronting the greatest obstacle in their lives—themselves. What ensues is a radical restructuring of values and life. Jesus was and is the ultimate Overcomer, and those who follow him are called to overcome too. Eventually, the believer will be able to say like the Lord Jesus Christ, "In me he hath nothing."
